"Year’s end is neither an end nor a beginning but a going on, with all the wisdom that experience can instill in us. Cheers to a new year and another chance for us to get it right."
-Oprah Winfrey

2014 kicks off with a bang. Well, more like a 16-ton weight. At 5:13am central time on New Years Day we have a new moon, this one a so-called super moon, in Capricorn at conjunction with Pluto and Mercury, along with the Sun. This is an extremely focused energy, with an emphasis on emotional and mental discipline. We can be confronted with our deepest fears, obsessions or ecstasies, whatever may be lurking deep in the subconscious as the normal filters and barriers are temporarily dropped. This is definitely one new year where you'll want to be responsible, sober and overall energetically clean.

New moons mean setting intentions, and this time around those intentions should be focused on being accountable for — well, everything! — this life and past. We are needing to gird ourselves up for a big spiritual push, as 2014 is going to usher in a great deal of change, and in order to be ready we have to drop the illusions that keep us in any state of victimization.

Does something in you need to change, or even die, for you to make forward progress? What do you cling to out of a false sense of security and can you let it go? In 2014 we have to take deliberate steps towards growth, otherwise we'll be forced to, and it's always better to cooperate than resist. The good news is we don't need to rush anything, we can take our time, being careful and planning ahead. Later in the year (see below) we will have our time to blaze.

Boldness in wisdom, risk-taking with maturity, these are themes that are also emphasized with the new moon and the year overall. If we are balanced and clear we can find a path open to us amongst the brush, easily navigated with our eyes forward. If not, we'll get the work we need to get there. Wherever we happen to be, we will be encouraged to take the hands of others, whether we or they are leading, joining together on this collective journey of systemic transformation.

As the year progresses, there are some very interesting transits to note, especially for the first half of the year. In late February the Lunar Nodes move from Scorpio/Taurus to Libra/Aries, putting more emphasis on relationships as we bond more deeply with our soul-comrades. The Nodes represent collective purpose and we are gathering our tribes for the coming radical changes (Uranus/Pluto square). In fact, just after the Nodes enter Libra/Aries, they turn direct, a relatively rare and brief event, which adds more emphasis to the Nodal theme. Also at that time Mars turns retrograde (more Aries emphasis!), asking us to review how we assert ourselves — aggressively or courageously? If you're having a difficult time, remember to ask for help. If you're in a boon, remember to help those who need it.

Then comes the doozy of all Uranus/Pluto squares. These two planets have been dancing around a 90º arc, or square, since 2010 and into 2015. On April 21st of this year these two planets reach exact square just a few days after Pluto turns stationary retrograde. Stationary points amplify the implied energy, especially so with Pluto. This could suggest more geopolitical upsets along with the related shifts in our personal lives. Later I'll discuss the implications of this particular square, but it reflects what ought to be an historic time.

Cooling down all the fire will be the continued transit of Jupiter through the water sign of Cancer, making trines to Chiron and Neptune in the wateriest of signs, Pisces. Spiritual guidance can be of great help, whether giving or receiving, and cultivating the awareness that "all the world is one." Surrender and spiritual devotion are strong allies, particularly at key points during the year. In fact, as we go through the shifts of Mars, Uranus, Pluto and the Lunar Nodes in Feb./March, Jupiter will be stationary direct at trine to the Pisces planets, amplifying our spiritual vibration. As we shift, so we lift, closer to Spirit.

"Whatever you can do or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, magic, and power in it."
-Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Jupiter enters Leo in July, and from there we can see our creative energies take off, having survived the prior months' trials. Sun, Mercury and Venus will cross Jupiter just before Jupiter's trine with Uranus, which suggests a blasting forward of new ideas and innovations coming from our creative source, relative to the work and balance we've achieved to that point. Mars then crosses Saturn in Scorpio, reminding us there's still a lot of inner work to do around jealousies and self-serving aggression. The year ends with a return to the Capricorn new moon on the Winter Solstice, followed a few days after by Saturn's entrance into Sagittarius, finally completing our long slog through Scorpio and beginning a new journey through the work of refining our inner truth.

We'll be hunkered down this winter, but later in the year we'll be given the juice to blast forward, so long as we keep our feet on the ground. Start preparing your summer creations now, the energies are supportive of making a plan. Keep the faith, your inner light burning, and no matter what tests come know that by linking your path with the path of the world you will emerge with new creative powers. Have a bold, uplifting, transformative and positively anchored new year!

Excellent. Thanks. I’m feelin’ the “filters down” experience. I definitely realized this is a NYE I want to be in a peaceful, calm space.

    • Aries says:

Good for you Julia for being conscious of and taking care of your needs. Have a lovely evening, and keep up the Capricorn strength in preparedness. Peace.

  2. How reassuring to know that after a time of struggle will come a boost of energy….to prepare but not rush…in releasing we grow …love the part about Boldness in wisdom and risk taking with maturity….so glad you are along for the ride – Thank you for sharing your gifts!

    • Aries says:

You’re so welcome, Carolyn. Astrology can be a beautiful tool for gauging the coming energy patterns. It allows us to prepare and have faith within the changes. And yet the results are always surprising. Wishing you a blessed year!

  3. Sacelli says:

Good post and good analysis, Brian. My favorite Goethe quote (except for ‘das ewig weibliche zieht uns an’; the eternal feminine draws us on). And the ‘remember to ask for help’ comment certainly turned out to be apt.

    • Aries says:

Thanks John. I agree with Goethe there, as the more I learn about myself the more I feel the feminine as the principle underlying my search. The energies are sure sorting themselves out aren’t they? The Capricorn process is here in earnest. Just ask the weatherman — ‘cuz whether-man or -woman, we’re all in this together.
