Last week I spoke with Dabney Lawless of Lawless Astrology about the astrological connections (there are many!) surrounding the Iran War. We covered the history between Iran and the U.S. and the striking astrological correlations between the two countries. It was an invigorating conversation, exploring astrology, history, and the meaning we can glean from these times.
As for the current astrological moment, we are marching along into the Aries parade, with all inner planets, plus Saturn and Neptune (and Chiron and Eris), all transiting through Aries by Wednesday. It's a heavily Aries-laden month, giving us the opportunity to throw off helplessness and misdirection and take effective action for the projects and causes we've been dreaming about.
As I said to Dabney, with all this Aries energy we can either attack what we fear or defend what we love. Mars in particular, which entered Aries last week, evokes the courageous warrior who protects the innocent; or the feckless tyrant who shields his pettiness and insecurity with callous arrogance and menacing threats. Where we stand on the spectrum between those polarities is our choice to make.
The great astrologer Robert Hand would quote from the Lord of the Rings when describing what he called "high Mars," or the most noble expression of the Mars archetype. Despite facing certain Doom (pun intended), Aragorn, a high-born ranger, kneels before Frodo, a simple hobbit, and vows:
"If by my life or death I can protect you, I will. You have my sword."
As we move through the challenging initiations of Aries, we have the choice of who or what will have our sword. What is deserving of our strength, protection, valiance, or courage? Where can we be fierce with our love? Who can we call on for the protection or encouragement we need ourselves? Finally, what can we say "no" to with the loving conviction that knows what is right for our soul?
It is perhaps revealing that the word courage derives from the Latin cor, or heart. The Sun rules the heart and is said to be exalted in Aries. True courage and strength arise not from physical dominance, but from the wisdom of the heart.
